Freud believed that sex drive and aggression were the driving force of the human life. Society imposes limitations on these drives keeping people from living in a destructable manner.

what is your opinion on sex drive and aggression. Do you think people are truly ruled by these things or are they just a part of the overall picture? Also how do you think society works to control or effect these things.

I actually agree more with Jung and Horney, in this matter.

Freud's views are amazing, but somewhat dated.

I tend to agree with Freud, even if he has some faults in his work.

He can get alittle nuts though, is all I'm saying.

He correlates most relationships to wanting to have sex with that person, or angry because you can't satisfy the desire. Though it's amazing what it is that he's saying because he's right, I like the breakthroughs that lead to other things.

There's alot of good motivational and personality based theories to be found in Freud, especially in the parts where he describes the Ego, Superego, and Id, and a handfull of other unconcious/ psychodynamic ideals.

But when he goes into the Oedipus complexes or you take into consideration that he did some of the cocaine he subscribed to his patients, I started to back away from his idea as a whole and focus on the whole thing, and where it lands.

Then again, I prefer Behaviorism.

Make a thread on behaviorism, i did a research paper on it and i would like to hear what you have to say about it.

I believe that trying to understand psychology is an exercise in futility. There's really no way you can judge a person's character or forecast how their life will go and what decisions they'll make, so I see no point in it. People's views change everyday, and their moods are subject to their own reason as well as their chemical make-up. There is stuff you can study biologically to try to understand a person's actions or thoughts or what-have-you, but I think trying to go any deeper than that or to try and understand thought processes or motives is like trying to understand why the wind blows this way instead of that.

Needless to say, I nearly flunked Psych 101 in college.

Eh, one day I suppose.

I used to be fascinated by Freud for awhile, he got me into the studdy. But it was mostly Skinner and Pavlov that got me hooked into the magic of behaviorism.

I'll get around too it.

You learn to try and study things that are flawed with the knowledge of understanding why they have flaws and how to fix them. Though you can't always understand them as you stated, if I can find out why someone has a Type A personality in oppose to a Type B personality then in the future maybe I can help talk that person out of suicide, or help them overcome depression, or even tell a business man how to create a marketing device the highlights what someone with a particular personality type and what they'd want.

Although your completely right in what your saying, when you draw a limit to what you can study with science, then your not even dealing with Science anymore.

You're right about science. If they listened to negative nellies like me, there'd be no electricity.

But do you think you can fit people snugly into personality catagories??? I wouldn't think that would work. I can understand splitting people up into demographics cuz those differences are cultural, but splitting people up based on their behavior or personality is much trickier business I think.
